Spillways and riprap wave protection
Flotsam from a cyclone
- The "wave protection" rip rap can be subjected to severe punishment as seen by these trees deposited during a cyclone.
- MPa and thickness of the concrete "cell slab" protection are determined by the size of wave which in turn depends on the reach of open water.
- The toe of the riprap should be well below the lowest water level expected. Hyson Cells is terminated in a cut-off to guard against undermining when the dam is low.
- There must be a drainage layer beneath the "cell slab". The "micro jointed" cell walls play an important role by releasing hydrostatic pressure.
