Spillways and riprap wave protection
Riprap and spillway one continuous "cell slab"
- The left hand side of the photo shows Hyson Cells riprap protection against wave action on the dam wall.
- The armouring also covers the wall where it is over-topped and also the downstream spillway. The whole is cast as a continuous Hyson Cells "cell slab" with no construction jointing between the different sections.
- Termination of the cell slab is especially important where there is a danger of undermining. The cells should terminate in deep concrete cut-off beams. If a spillway ends with a settlement pond then apparent safe velocities of concrete with Hyson Cells are 18 m/sec.
