Walls

Layered wall under construction

  • The wall is 40 metres high and 20 metres wide at the base
  • The wall was built in a forestry area. Only the cells had to be transported to the site and they only weighed 50 kg for a 100 sq m pack. In-situ fill was used
  • The outer row of cell pockets were vegetated. No covering cell blanket was used. The lush vegetation that was planted would adequately protect the vertical cell walls from the sun.
  • The wall withstood a cyclone the following year. The water was seen to cascade down the slope. The root biomass prevented any significant erosion from the cells.
  • 10 years later the wall had been so completely wooded that we could not find it even though it was very near to the forestry road.
  • Such walls can be constructed with faces as steep as 70 degrees.
  • The degree of compaction should be so as to achieve the design mass of the gravity wall and it must be remembered that loose fill will wash out should rain fall before rooting is established
